Food:
¡¡

Caf¨¦

The old adage rings true here ¨C if you can¡¯t buy it, make it!  As Kosher food is scarce in China, the Jewish Center has opened a Kosher Caf¨¦.

Lunch and dinner can be ordered by advance notice, for eating at the Caf¨¦ or for delivery.
The four course meals are cooked fresh daily by an on-site chef.

¡¡

 Bakery

French bread, baguettes, Italian loafs and tomato rolls ¨C nothing is beyond our professional baker.  Challah is a delectable treat for Friday nights and New York style bagels are in the making.
Fresh breads are available each Thursday; frozen breads available each day.

¡¡

Meat and Poultry

Believe it or not, Kosher steak is not ¡®rare¡¯ in Shanghai!  With a Shochet providing meat, chicken and lamb several times a year, a supply of Kosher products is available for sale at the Jewish Center.

Another great step to comfortable Jewish living!

Vegetarian Restaurant: There are no Vegetarian restaurants in China that comply to Kashrut standards. There may indeed be non-kosher fat in a food that is labeled ¡®strictly vegetarian. 'Many travelers have unfortunately learned this the hard way.

¡¡

Water: One may NOT drink the water in Shanghai or mainland China ¨C use only distilled water for drinking and cooking. Bottled/distilled water can be purchased here.

Fruits & Veggies: Fresh produce could be eaten but should be scrubbed with disinfectant soap and preferably boiled before eating. For your own safety, do not eat from the vendors on the streets.

¡¡

Climate and Clothing:

¡¡

Shanghai has a monsoon climate of East Asia. It is Bordered by sea in the east with a warm and humid climate and four distinct seasons.

Light clothes like lined Jacket and woolen sweater are suitable for the weather in Spring (from March through to the end of May) and Autumn (from September to November). Extra-light clothing is for summer (from June to August). Heavy woolen overcoats are necessary to keeping out the cold outdoors in winter (from December to February). Since there is much rain during the periods between Spring and Summer and between Summer and Autumn, it is advisable to get rain gear ready.
